Stigma
Stigma is a severe form of social disapproval experienced by those who deviate from the social norm. Stigma can lead to ostracization and marginalization (exclusion from society).
Stigma often results from misconceptions about mental illnesses.
People who have mental illnesses often face stigma, which can lead to shame, embarrassment, as well as refusal to seek treatment. Family members can also experience stigma.
Fighting stigma is one of NAMI's primary goals.
