Byetta does several things. It increases the amount of insulin produced by your pancreas. It prevents your liver from producing too much sugar (by reducing the action of glucagon). It slows the emptying of your stomach. It slows the release of sugar into your bloodstream.
Byetta is approved for use along with metformin (Glucophage) or sulfonylurea drugs such as glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide, glibenclamide, glimepiride, gliclazide, gliquidone, and others.
In addition, many doctors prescribe Byetta off-label for use with other diabetes drugs, or sometimes, by itself.
Byetta was developed after the study of a hormone found in the saliva of the gila monster, one of the two venomous lizards in existance. The other is the Mexican beaded lizard.
Byetta is made by Amylin and Eli Lilly, it was announced on April 29, 2005.
